Nov 20,  · The Contours were known for their high-energy live act, and the outrageously comedic lyrics of “First I Look at the Purse” played right into their stage persona. It was the last hit that Gordon recorded with the group. A year later Potts returned and English left, followed by Gordon.

The Contours, from Detroit, never made it big, but this song is their oeuvre. The mp3 conversion, on the other hand, is sketchy with hiccups in the conversion process. I still have First I Look At the Purse in my 45 rpm collection, so Hitsville, whoever you are, call me. My version is still in pretty decent shape.5/5(3).

'Cause if the purse is fat, that's where it's at Some fellas look at the way they walk The way they swing and sway Some fellas like the way they talk And dig the things they say But I don't care if she wobble like a duck Or talk with a lisp, I still think I'm a good lover If the dollar bills are crisp 'Cause first I look at the purse First .
